College Corruption At Its Worst

College Corruption At Its Worst
by Connie H. Deutsch

I remember my university days when our basketball team made the news for taking a bribe and throwing some basketball games. The team was ostracized; our university suffered a black eye. If my parents had known about it, they would have transferred me out of there in a heartbeat.

I can’t imagine what they would have done if they had heard about the corruption going on at Ohio State University. They probably would have taken the university to court for corrupting its innocent minors. And in those years, we were innocent.

But the situation is even more extensive than just OSU. It is only the tip of the iceberg. Corruption is so widespread in this country that it has infiltrated academia nationally.

It has been reported that “Federal officials found evidence that more than 100 researchers nationwide committed misconduct over the past decade, and experts are certain that universities and other institutions underreport that fraud, which comes at an untold cost to taxpayers.”

Ohio State University is an example of underreporting. The university’s investigation of research misconduct by a pharmacy professor failed at first to recognize his deception. In fact, they glossed over it because millions of dollars in grants were at stake.

The pharmacy department concluded that the “irregular” images in journal articles on the part of professor Terry Elton were caused by disorganization, not “intentional malfeasance” on his part.

A year later, the federal Office of Research Integrity urged the university to reconsider the case, using a PowerPoint presentation to highlight a pattern of falsified images in Elton’s publications over the past decade.

It could no longer be hidden. The university was forced to admit that Elton had intentionally misstated figures in several journal articles and in a grant application to the National Institutes of Health.

John Dahlberg, director of the federal office’s investigative oversight division, wrote “It is clear from the PowerPoint that Dr. Elton has a long-standing convention of reusing figures to represent both control and experimental conditions. It would also appear that he has copied, resized/stretched/shrunk, darkened and flipped images (horizontally and vertically) … to conceal similarities.”

He went on to say that “the images in question include those of proteins and microRNAs – small RNA molecules that regulate gene expression.”

Elton was forced to retract all six of his articles although a total of $1.6 million in grant money was associated with this project.

The handling of Elton’s case raises questions about whether research misconduct inquiries at universities are rigorous enough to root out wrongdoing.

Dr. Ivan Oransky, co-founder of the blog Retraction Watch and executive editor of Reuters Health, said, “The Elton case should spur university officials to examine what they can do to make sure such an oversight doesn’t happen. It behooves them to do as thorough a job as possible rather than find excuses for why they didn’t find it the first time . . . If they need to be nudged, why should tax dollars be going to places that have very little accountability?”

The Office of Research Integrity received an anonymous tip about Elton’s research in July 2010. After Elton was cleared by the pharmacy department’s first investigation, Dahlberg asked that anyone who had a personal or working relationship with Elton be removed from the panel investigating the matter. He also requested that OSU officials ensure that the committee had members with expertise in reading Western blots, a lab technique used to detect proteins that Elton had reportedly falsified.

In a staggering decision, OSU will allow Elton, who is tenured, to keep his $130,146 a year job. In deference to the sensitive issue of the fraud that he committed, he will be barred from serving as primary advisor to undergraduate or graduate students, postdoctoral trainees or lab technicians for three years, plus other sanctions.

Dr. Oransky said, “Elton’s misconduct is similar to or greater than that of other researchers who lost their jobs. It’s unusual for this level of misconduct to not be punished by either an early resignation or early retirement.”

Elton’s written response was, “Although I strongly disagree with the conclusions of the College of Pharmacy Investigation Committee Report and the severity of the proposed sanctions, I take full responsibility for the figure irregularities in manuscripts outlined by (the National Institutes of Health).”

The fact that research misconduct allegations against Terry Elton were not proven until the Office of Research Integrity requested a second investigation suggests that research misconduct policies at Ohio State University were misused as tools to fuel greed and corruption. After all, why kill the “cash cow” for the sake of honesty and justice if it meant giving up millions of dollars in funding from federal grants and other sources at Ohio State University?

So, Elton will keep his $130,146 a year job and he will still be teaching at OSU; he just won’t be allowed to do research for three years. And he’s complaining about that? If this had been anywhere other than in academia, he would be going to prison for fraud.

Roughly 7,100 university faculty, staff and graduate research associates take part in research at Ohio State, according to the university. I can’t imagine any of them not feeling tainted by the association of Elton’s fraudulent research articles or students wanting to take his classes. I can’t imagine NIH not being reluctant to fund more grants for OSU, especially with the perpetrator of this fraud still on staff.

To make matters worse, OSU officials disclosed two other investigations of research misconduct over the past five years. One began in 2009 but has not been completed by the Office on Research Integrity, a university spokesman said. The other probe, which began in 2011, involved a pharmacy graduate student who the university will not name. He falsified lab data, according to a university report.

And all this makes me wonder how any student who is interested in pharmacology and/or interested in pharmacology research would want to enroll in a university that puts fraudulent research ahead of the welfare of their students and the welfare of the taxpayers.

Co-education in Islam

Co-education in Islam- A brief documentary: Is it allowed or forbidden?

Co-education? Do you know what co-education is? It means that an education which is based on combining both sexes i.e. male and female. In co-education school and colleges there are no restrictions on male and female mingling, talking, having gossips and outing. It’s a fact that Islam denies mixing of male and female openly but in today’s world the schools and colleges run under Muslims denies this fact. Most of the schools even got a slap on their reputation when news spread in society about the wrong doings in school. Basically, the co-education schools were founded by Christians and other religions on the basis that it can bring male and female together in walks of life but during last years shameful reports are coming about the incident in co-education schools, colleges and universities.

Let me remind you about the history. When British gained control over the sub-continent they forced the locals (Hindus and Muslims) to admit their children in co schools. As a matter of honor most Muslims families refused to send their female children in co-education schools for which they were tortured, etc. In hadith bukhari, Imam bukhari wrotes:

Narrated by Abu Huraira (ra): The Prophet said, “Faith (Belief) consists of more than sixty branches (i.e. parts). And Haya is a part of faith.” (Bukhari)

The importance of haya (modesty) can be found in this hadith of Prophet: Prophet (saw) said: “Haya does not bring anything except good.”(Bukhari Hadith)

Don’t you think that co-education system in schools and other educational institutions are denies this hadith. Don’t you believe that co-education system in our society are promoting immodesty, I wish you should read this news of guardian newspaper where a strange incident took place in co-educated school

http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/2005/mar/11/schools.uk

In our country too there are crimes committed in co-universities and colleges. Check it yourself about the hidden truth of Pakistan’s universities. These were some of the sites I found related to this article:

http://blogs.tribune.com.pk/story/10196/the-islamic-university-where-girls-were-raped/ http://www.dawn.com/2012/02/10/shame-covers-sleaze-2.html http://pakmed.net/college/forum/?p=11283

The text in the link states about some of the harmful out comes of co-education in our society. Do you like the thing happened to our sisters in Pakistan’s university if it happens with your own relatives or your blood relations. Of course not.

These reports may shock many you. If you are studying in Co-education institute think is it lawful in Islam it have open relations with your opposite sex?

Quran says: “Say to the believing man that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that will make for greater purity for them; and Allah is well acquainted with all that they do. And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; and that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what must ordinarily appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands…” (Quran 24:30-31)

So do you see it is now allowed in Quran for men and women to gaze each other which is a common practice in our society in now a days. God save us from it. Inshallah If you are not yet cleared about the harmful effects of Co-education then you must watch this debate of Dr.zakir naik http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SstRRSh7oNk

In this youtube video a great Muslim scholar condemns mixing of male and females in co-education Schools unless and until women had not observed Hijab (veil) and under Islamic grounds. Even it is better that in schools male teacher should teaches male students and female teacher should study female students as expressed by Dr.zakir naik that if a patient is women she should be treated by same gender. Now, do you believe that co-education schools in our society are playing a significant role to promote Islam? Even they can’t do anything for us they should stop mixing of opposite genders to prevent them from committing big sins (gunah-e-kabira) such as adultery, fornication, etc. These crimes are one of the biggest crimes of according of Islam In some hadith and ayats of Quran the punishment for Zina can be judged

-And come not near to unlawful sex. Verily, it is a Faahishah (i.e. anything that transgresses its limits: a great sin, and an evil way that leads one to hell unless Allah Forgives him)- [al-Isra’ 17:32]

Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: -No adulterer is a believer at the time when he is committing adultery- Narrated by al-Bukhaari (2475) and Muslim (57).

The punishment of zina stated in Quran is: “The woman and the man guilty of adultery or fornication,- flog each of them with a hundred stripes: Let not compassion move you in their case, in a matter prescribed by Allah, if ye believe in Allah and the Last Day: and let a party of the Believers witness their punishment.” Surah 24. An-Nur Verse 2

So it is a fact and hence proven that co-education system in Islamic society can harm our culture and can even led our youngsters to commit severe crimes as proven by the stories in the link. It is a matter of shame for our elder Muslims who run co-educated schools and allowed mixing of male and female youngster. Remember all sins are not highlighted. I have heard stories from my friends which tells me about crimes committed in their schools such as adultery, gazing, etc

However co-educated schools can be run with some new Islamic laws such as: 1.It can be made permissible for female students to wear proper Hijab under Islamic grounds 2.There should be separate girls and boys classes 3.Under Islamic law it can be made forbidden that opposite sex should mixed with each other openly and have sitting and gathering in campuses.

Remember Islam is the only religion which commands for Hijab to protect our mothers, daughters and sisters. Save your Mothers, Sisters and daughter from getting victims of Evil

Coaching And Crash Courses For Ca, Cs And Icwai

Trying hard to get through the Professional Exams in commerce stream like Chartered Accountancy, Company Secretary and Cost & Works Accountants? Results not behaving the way you want them to?

We all know very well that getting through the various levels of these courses offered by the respective institutes of ICAI, ICSI and ICWAI have always been a difficult task for all of us. The Question that arises – Is it really that challenging task or a tough task or is it BOTH tough and challenging?

Why it so happens that even if we are satisfied with our performances on the examination days still we are unable to make it! Is it because of the increasing examination pressure? Or the peer pressure? Or would it be wrong if it is said that it’s just we arent prepared the way we should have been as these professional examinations demand.

We all try our best to prepare for the examinations be it for CPT/Foundation courses or for the Final levels of Chartered Accountants, Company Secretaries, Cost and Works Accountants.
It becomes even more difficult for students to come out confidently when the graduation classes & Articleships/Practical Trainings are going on parallel. Even when we know we are running short of time to do our studies for these professional courses we have no choice but to still manage to steal some time out for the coaching classes of various important subjects which has become of utmost importance in today’s competitive examination scenario.

We all more or less do all this for clearing our examinations. Have we ever thought that why it happens that only VERY FEW of us get through the exams in the term we expect us to clear ESPECIALLY when we all put the same amount of hard work and attend the same coaching classes?

Considering the above time crunch that we face with the on going articleship, coaching classes etc we end up postponing our self studies towards the end. Hence, we actually start preparing for the respective examination during our preparation leaves or when we are through with our coaching classes. Under such a situation, we actually unknowingly put ourselves in tremendous pressure & in a difficult position which is quite visible on the faces of most of us when we are sitting to write the papers.

What we learn from this simple factual statement as narrated above that the MOST important thing which we all generally skip is timely and regularly preparing for the examinations which at one end would help us complete our courses in time BUT at the other end will also lead to a better temperament and confidence levels that is required for the FINAL DAY!.

When the reasons of our NOT “up to the mark” performance in the professional exams is so clear, then what is the solution to this?
Friends, the solution is also as clear as the problem itself. We just need to structure our preparation time table in a better way and which is spread over a longer duration before the final day! Thats it!

To fight with the current situation, the MOCK TEST SOLUTIONS offered by Eduex is gaining tremendous importance among the commerce students community (students of Chartered Accountants, Company Secretaries, Cost & Work Accountants courses).

Eduex.in, an initiative taken by few of the Finance Professionals has been brought into existence with this noble cause of assisting students to develop and execute a more structured preparation time table for their studies which not only helps them prepare for the examinations within minimum time but also helps student develop the CORRECT Temperament & confidence which is of utmost importance for clearing professional examinations which day by day are gaining intense competition levels. Last but not the least, the feedback on the performances in the MOCK TESTS directly from the pen of the ACADEMIC COUNCIL team of Eduex is doing wonders for students.

Wish you all All the Very Best for your future endeavors!

Choosing An Online Private College And University

Private colleges and Universities are known for their high standards and excellent academic programs. Their online programs are no different. If you are ready to get your Bachelors degree, or if you are ready to continue your post-secondary education, consider an online private college or University degree program.

Getting an education through an online private college or university degree program can be an experience that is every bit as enriching, interpersonal, and dynamic as attending college the traditional face-to-face way. A big misconception is that online learning is impersonal. This isnt the case at all. Programs offered online present the same opportunities for group work, independent study, and interpersonal communication as do traditional methods of learning. In fact, attending college online helps to facilitate the independent learning process, as well as developing time management skills. Attending an online University takes just as much commitment as the old-fashioned way of going to school, and the potential career and personal benefits are just as great, if not greater. As the popularity of attending college online increases, more campus-based private colleges and Universities are joining the fast-growing group of online-only private colleges and Universities in offering several different levels of degrees over the Internet, presenting students with broader educational options, as well as flexibility and convenience.

There are many advantages for a student seeking a secondary education to choose an online private college and University degree program. Proximity is a key factor. A student does not need to live locally to an accredited private college or University. Attending all classes and submitting coursework online eliminates the need for commuting or relocating. Earning a degree from an online private college or University is a convenient way to advance your education and training. A school may offer more sections of popular courses, as well as night and weekend courses, which allows a student more flexibility. This is an ideal situation for those who work full time and/or care for a family. Additionally, if you are a student who is considering returning to school after several years, going to school online is a perfect way to ease into the routine of class work and projects again, and can lessen the stress of feeling the need to fit in with younger students. Besides, who wouldnt find it appealing to attend college from the comforts of home?

If you are worried that you might not be able to afford a degree from an online private college or University program, there are options. Some employers might offer to pay a portion or even all tuition and fees toward an employee receiving a degree. Also, financial aid in the form of grants, loans, and even scholarships might be available to you. Check with the particular online program of interest to see what financial options are available.

The type of degree you can earn through an online private college or University degree program is vast. Aside from earning Associates, Bachelors, and PhD degrees, professionals can continue their educations and stay up to the minute in their fields. Online learning is no longer just for web designers and computer programmers. You may study Business, Social Sciences, Criminal Justice, Humanities, Mathematics, Human Resources, Fine Arts, and various Healthcare programs. Depending on the type of degree you are seeking (graduate, for example), there may be certain academic requirements that you have to fulfill to be able to attend. Make sure you do your research when trying to decide on an online private college or University.

With the prevalence of the Internet and technologies such as teleconferencing available today, it is possible to come away from the experience of attending and online private college or University not only with a degree, but also being more in tune with technology, which has the potential to broaden your career opportunities even more. Seeking an education through an online private college or University degree program is a legitimate, convenient, and flexible way for you to advance you education, as well as your career and personal potential.

Childhood Is The Golden Period Of Life

Childhood is the golden period of life. The child lives a life of great innocence. He is extremely lovable. He is the darling of every heart. He is fondled, caressed and hugged time and again. He is apple of his parent eyes. Then from a child he becomes a student. In the age of a student he is scanning, reading and pursuing his books. The pursuit of knowledge is a very difficult job. He studies and becomes the star of his/her parents and of the world. Education is only the job from which a student can raise his/her parents face proudly up in the sky. If he is diligent and laborious, he will pass all his examinations with flying colors. The development of education has made the old generation to start with a new generation with new thoughts and new beginning. Every child has his/her own aim. There are few children in India those who want to become a scientist or a doctor.
They think that the history of wheel of early mans have proved that without education also a man do whatever they want. But the change in generation is the hint of that education has to also be changed and the want ages are also increasing. Science has revolutionized our life. No sphere of our life remains untouched by science, whether at home or in school. Education has made the life so easy, nowadays that all the gadget and machines are man made. With the help of education women power has come in front of the world. Women have proved that they are not equal but more intelligent than the boys. Many women are going to school and teaching to students the moral values. In the golden period of life, when one makes life long friends. When one reads master authors. They influence the students immensely. This educated life can never be repeated in later life. Let us grape it with bath hands. Let us hay while the sun shines let us make the best of our life that we will make this generation our best generation of education.
Education in the broadest sense in any act or experience that has a formative effect on the mind character or physical ability of an individual. In its technical sense education is the process by which society deliberately transmits its accumulated knowledge, skills and value from one generation to another.
Teachers in educational institutions direct the education of students and might draw on many subjects, including reading writing, mathematics, science and history. This process is sometimes called schooling.
When referring to the education of teaching only a certain subject, usually as professors at institutions of higher learning. A good education system incorporates in its fold not only the text book knowledge but also inculcates among student capacity to understand , develop and change as per the cultural , social economic and biological diversities. It develops among the student team spirit, leadership and adaptability qualities as per local and global competitive requirements.
Student life is the golden period in mans life. They should learn good thing and should not go towards evil. This is the only way with which he can make his life. The career of the student depends on his education. Education is the key of life not getting stabbed with a knife education will lead to great heights find not to every day fights. So instead of being at rest get education at its best.

Champ Bailey Bio – In His Early Years

Champ Bailey Bio (Mom, Dad, Brothers and Sister)
As a 9 time NFL Pro Bowler, Champ Bailey is one of the most admired defensive players in the league. Often considered to be amongst the best (if not the best) NFL cornerbacks in the country. As a Top cornerback in the NFL, he always puts forth a solid effort and is known to cover more than half the football field by himself.
Champ Bailey’s life is similar to many professional athletes in that he worked hard to get where he’s at today. Since his early years, he has always shown potential as a top player and his brothers were right beside him. A look at Champs upbringing, lifestyle and family will give you an idea of how he got to where he is today.

Champs Bio Family and Hometown
Champs story begins with his brothers and their influence on his life. Champ and Boss Bailey played together for the Denver Broncos, a dream that came true for these brothers that played togetherin their youngers years too. The last time two brothers played for the Broncos was back in 92′ with Doug and Dave Widell. Peyton, Eli and Cooper Manning’s (older brother)chronicle is comparable to that of the Bailey brother’s. The Bailey brother’s include three members too, although in both situations their oldest brothers career was cut short due to a injuries. The older Bailey brother, Ron, was a two year starting cornerback at the University of Georgia (same college all Bailey brothers played). Ron also played for NFL Europe representing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Unfortunately his career ended with a serious foot injury. Ron Bailey has been given credit by both Boss and Champ for his dedication and strong work ethic Champ has explained several times about how Ron’s guidance has been very influential to his own success. Elaine (Mom) Bailey explains that all Ron talked about was how to get to the “next level”, whether it was sports, education or career(inspiring his two younger brothers). The three brothers are well respected in their hometown community, of course by playing great football, but were also good students. Boss and Champ visit their hometown frequently, sometimes hosting meals for the entire town, sometimes around the holidays or other special events. To give you an idea of Champs loyalty to home and family, when he put his name in for the NFL draft, ESPN offered him a free plane ticket and hotel in New York City, instead Champ chose to go home and watch the draft with his family and home town on T.V. Another very close member of the family is Danielle Bailey, Champs sister. She lives in Stockton, GA and organizes the Bailey football camp. The parents of this distinguished group is Roland and Elaine Bailey, who are split up, but still stay very close to their children and are responsible for raising these fine individuals.

High School career
Champ Bailey’s high school that he attended is Chalton County High, located in his hometown Folkston, Georgia (a 3 stop light town). Champ played football, basketball (33 inch vertical, dunking was not a problem), and track (Georgia’s high jump champion his Junior year). In regards to football, he showed amazing potential on the field according to coaches and locals, playing quarterback and free safety. In his senior year, coach moved him to tailback and his QB was none other, than his own brother Boss. As tailback he accumulated over 1,800 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns. Divide those stats over a 12 game season and you get pretty impressive numbers! Hence, it is understandable that colleges all over the country wanted to get him onboard for their own team. But, in the end, Bailey decided to go with with his older brother Ron at University of Georgia.
